Build Log: The FT-891 Remote Head Mount

The Yaesu FT-891 is a great little rig for portable and mobile work, but the remote head doesn’t ship with a great mounting solution if you’re not buying the official (and pricier) bracket. Here’s how the Kerchunk Co. version came together.

Prototype 1 was a simple friction-fit shell. It held the head fine on a workbench, but on anything with real vibration — like, say, a vehicle dashboard — it worked itself loose within a few miles.

Prototype 2 added a locking tab on the back, sized for a standard RAM-mount-style ball adapter. Much more secure, but the tolerances were too tight for consistent prints across different filament batches.

Prototype 3 (the current design) loosened the tab tolerance by 0.2mm, added a small chamfer to guide the head into place, and switched to a slightly more flexible print profile so the tab has some give without cracking. It’s held solid through a full print-and-drive test.
